What does SIPRE stand for?
Snow, Ice, and Permafrost Research Establishment. This was a research program started in the 1950's by the Army in cooperation with Northwestern University. Their mission was to study cold regions and how to build in them. In the 1960's the program was relocated and reorganized becoming the Cold Regions Research and Engineering laboratory (CRREL), which still exists today.
